Sell on Google's AI Mode
Why Google’s AI mode changes product discovery
Why Google’s AI mode changes product discovery

Traditional Google Shopping appears when users search for specific products they already know they want.
Google's AI mode surfaces products when users ask open-ended questions, such as "What gaming laptop should I get for video editing?" or "Best cookware for induction stoves under €200?"
Google's AI reads your product data-titles, descriptions, attributes, reviews and decides whether to recommend your products in these conversational searches.
The next step used to be clicking through to your store. Now, it's turning into instant checkout. Shoppers can complete purchases directly in AI Mode without leaving Google. You remain the seller of record while Google handles the payment flow.
How Google AI Shopping works in practice
When a shopper asks "best wireless headphones for working from home," Google's AI scans product feeds for relevant matches, evaluates attributes like noise cancellation and microphone quality, checks pricing and reviews, then presents recommendations with purchase options.
Your product appears if your feed clearly signals: category (headphones), features (wireless, noise-cancelling, built-in mic), use case indicators (home office, calls, comfort), competitive pricing, and positive reviews. And when they're ready to buy, checkout happens instantly.
For eligible U.S. retailers, Google is rolling out native checkout powered by the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP). Shoppers can complete purchases using saved payment details in Google Wallet / Google Pay, with PayPal support following soon.

There is no extra fee for AI Overviews. Any paid clicks from AI-enhanced Shopping experiences are billed under your existing Google Ads setup, the same as other Shopping and Search placements. Organic appearances in AI Overviews have no additional costs, just like organic Google Shopping results. -

Products are chosen based on data quality (complete titles, attributes, GTINs, images, availability), relevance to the specific query beyond just keyword matching, competitiveness (pricing and stock availability), and trust signals like reviews, merchant quality, and policy compliance. Google's AI evaluates how well your product answers the user's question semantically, not just through keyword matches.

There is no specific AI Overviews opt-out switch. Your control remains at the Merchant Center and campaign level, where you choose which products to submit or exclude, which products to promote, and how you bid on paid placements.
If products are active and approved in your Merchant Center feed, they can be used as candidates for AI-driven shopping experiences.
